Melvin Whittet successfully completed his therapy program on Friday, Sept 22 and was able to safely return home to his wife of 66 years. Melvin and his wife chose Stearns for his rehab stay following a hospitalization after suffering a CVA. His therapy program consisted of Physical, Occupational and Speech therapy.
Melvin and his wife were thankful for the therapy team and everything they did to get Melvin back home. “I couldn’t have made the progress I did without John and Jenni, two of my therapists,” said Melvin.

We had such a great week celebrating National Nursing Home Week. Stearns provides a steadfast commitment to providing a high-level of care for our residents. This has never been more evident than the last two years, during the pandemic. We took this week to celebrate the essential role that our facility and staff play in creating and nurturing connections with the residents, family and community. We featured a daily theme and everyone enjoyed a successful week.
Stearns Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, LLC took an afternoon to honor and express our appreciation to our First Responders during National Police Week and National EMS Week.
Granite City Police Dept., Pontoon Beach Police Dept., Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Granite City Ambulance, ARCH of Granite City and Abbott Ambulance all received a basket if a variety of gourmet popcorn from the Chef Shoppe. “We want to say Thank you to the First Responders that selflessly give of themselves day after day. This is only a small token of our appreciations for that they do for our facility and the community, ” said Angela Walker, Director of Admissions.
Nothing brings us more joy then to see one of our short term rehab guests meet their goals and get to go home. We are so happy for Mr. Bailey and wish you good health and happiness going forward.
Stearns Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, LLC is pleased to announce that Helen Garner M.D. as their Medical Director.
Dr. Garner is a Board Certified Geriatrician. She joined General Medicine P.C. to focus her practice exclusively in the care of the elderly and chronically ill patients. She has practice geriatric medicine for 30 years in the St. Louis, Danville and Edwardsville, IL areas. Dr. Garner has a very gentle and caring personality. She is very approachable to her patients and families.
Stearns welcomed the New Year in with Covid-19 vaccine for both residents and staff. Thank you to Walgreens for assisting in this effort. We continue to social distance and wear all required PPE. We are anxious for the day our residents and families can be reunited.
To bring a bit of joy to children of the community, Stearns Nursing & Rehab hosted a free Grinch Photo Booth event. The event was hosted at Fairfield Inn & Suites Conference Room due to some cold, wet weather. Residents grandchildren as well as children of the local and surrounding communities were able to come and visit the Grinch and pose for some pictures. Refreshments of hot chocolate and iced sugar cookies were available and each child received some Grinch coloring pictures and a Grinch Grow Heart to take home. “We’re so happy to be able to provide things such as this for our community. The excitement and delight on the kid’s faces was so nice to see after the difficult year we have all been through.” said Social Service Director, Angie Clark.
